Bluetooth Locator

Caveat: I do a lot of reviews for products from Amazon.ca and I usually get these products either free or for a discount. I never planned to use this blog for those reviews – I expect what I review here to be more personal in nature. I may change that but for now that’s how it is.

Every now and then, Amazon seems to lose a review, as was the case with this Bluetooth Locator I received. In these situations there isn’t much I can do about it but if I really like the product, I want to give the seller the exposure. That is the situation this time. I have no relationship with this seller outside of my testing of this product.

I had heard about locator devices but they’re usually quite expensive. This one is made by a company called i3C and it retails on Amazon.ca for $16.99, so it’s very affordable. Here’s how the listing describes it.

My experience

I like the idea of having a Bluetooth locator on my key chain because sometimes I spend ages trying to find where I left my keys. I try to put them in the same place every night, but if I’m in a hurry I forget and then in the mornings I’ve been late for work sometimes because I am running around my house, looking for my keys, which is why I wanted to try this Bluetooth locator from i3C.

I have an Android phone, so my experience is with that. I can’t comment on the iPhone experience. The locator came with a 2032 battery which is very common and easy to find when you need to replace it, a little blue triangle thing to open the locator device to put the battery in, and an instruction booklet. I’ll be honest, the instructions are not the best. It would be nice if the company did a YouTube video to explain it all.i3C open

First you need to open the locator device from the bottom at the back, using the blue triangle thing. It’s hard to see the little notch but trust me, it’s there. Insert the battery with the negative side down and then close the locator.

ImHere+ App

Next, download the app. If you want to scan the QR code, scan it from the instruction booklet not the box. I couldn’t get the one on the box to work but the one from the instruction booklet worked perfectly. The app is free download from the Google Play Store by searching for ImHere+.

Pairing

To pair the app with the locator device, you need to make sure Bluetooth is on for your phone. Don’t try to pair it through your phone’s Bluetooth though. Open the app, and click Binding/Setup, and turn it on. It will beep when it’s connected. If you have more than one locator device, you will go through these steps to pair each of them. You can name each locator device. For example, I called mine Keys.Screenshot_2016-08-06-20-04-01

Locating

To locate my device, I opened the app, selected the locator device and clicked the image. The locator device started beeping. When I pressed the button on the locator device, a chime sounded on my phone and the beeping stopped. You can customize all of these sounds so it’s individual for each device in the tool Settings.

Screenshot_2016-08-06-20-08-11The app has an amazing number of functions that it can perform. You can set a sleep time, monitor the battery of the locator, check the connection state, etc. The app also keeps a History of the locations, and has functions for compass, location, and satellite (satellite is kind of like google earth and shows you 3D view of the location). There’s also a tracking option on it. Want to know where your daughter really goes when she’s going to the store late at night? Slip this into your car before she leaves and find out. Okay, that’s sneaky but at least I’m not tracking my husband. Yet. (Just kidding on the last part!)

Remote control

Screenshot_2016-08-06-20-42-25You can also use it to remotely control your camera or you record function on your phone. In the app, select the camera function. You can rotate the camera so you’re using either the front or the back camera. When you’re ready click the button on the locator device, and your phone will take the photo. I actually having a tripod with a cell phone holder, and this will be so cool to take photos with my phone, without having to worry about holding the phone steady. I’ll set it up and when I’m ready, I’ll take the photo remotely. For audio recording, select the record function in the app. Place your phone wherever you want it (hidden on your desk maybe?) and when you want to start recording, click the button on your locator device. Click it again when you want to stop recording.

Summary

I think this is REALLY cool technology for this price. As I mentioned earlier, I received this Bluetooth locator as a promotional item so that I could try it out. I think $16.99 is a great price and I absolutely love it. If you like it, here’s where you can buy it on Amazon.ca:
